Metal Wall Art

Industrial edge meets gallery-grade color reproduction on aluminum panels.

Printing on aluminum removes the barrier of glass, resulting in a highly saturated, glare-resistant display. Because the image is infused directly into the coating of the sheet, metal wall art provides unparalleled color depth and contrast. This medium is particularly effective for high-contrast photography, vivid digital art, and architectural subjects. Designed without traditional framing, the floating mount pushes the artwork slightly off the wall, creating a clean, borderless profile suited for contemporary environments.

The Process Behind Metal Print Reproduction

Metal prints are created using dye-sublimation, a process fundamentally different from traditional inkjet printing. Rather than spraying ink onto the surface, the image is printed onto a transfer paper with specialized dyes. The paper is adhered to a specially coated aluminum sheet and placed in a heat press. Under high heat and pressure, the dyes turn into a gas and permeate the polymer coating of the metal. When cooled, the image becomes a permanent part of the aluminum sheet. This method yields a wider color gamut and deeper blacks than standard paper prints. The resulting surface is completely flat and smooth, with an inherent luminescence that comes from the metallic base reflecting light through the translucent dye layer.

Where and How to Specify Metal in Interiors

Because the dye is embedded in a rigid, non-porous polymer coating, aluminum prints are inherently resistant to moisture, heat, and physical abrasion. This makes them the definitive choice for environments where canvas or paper would warp or degrade over time. Kitchens, bathrooms, and high-traffic commercial spaces benefit from metal's durability. Aesthetically, the frameless profile and slim physical depth work best in minimalist, industrial, or highly modern spaces. When styling metal prints, consider the lighting; direct overhead spots will highlight the glossy finish, while softer, diffused lighting emphasizes the material's depth and color saturation without sharp reflections.

Frequently asked

4

Are metal prints suitable for outdoor installation?
Standard metal prints are highly durable but are intended for indoor or covered outdoor use. Direct, prolonged exposure to sunlight will eventually cause the dyes to fade, just as UV rays degrade automotive paint or textiles. For an outdoor installation, the print must be placed in a shaded area protected from direct precipitation and intense afternoon sun.
How do you clean a metal print?
Unlike framed paper which requires glass cleaner, or canvas which can only be lightly dusted, metal prints can be wiped down with a damp microfiber cloth. For stubborn spots or fingerprints, a small amount of non-abrasive glass cleaner or isopropyl alcohol can be applied directly to the cloth. Avoid abrasive sponges or heavy chemical solvents.
Do metal prints have a metallic sheen?
The level of metallic sheen depends on the finish. A white-base finish coats the aluminum in a solid white layer before printing, ensuring colors remain accurate and vivid, much like printing on glossy paper. A clear-base finish allows the raw silver aluminum to show through the lighter areas of the image, replacing white pixels with raw metal for a highly industrial, metallic look.
How heavy is a standard metal print?
Despite its rigid appearance, aluminum is exceptionally lightweight. A standard 24×36 inch metal print weighs between 4 and 6 pounds, depending on the attached mounting hardware. This makes them significantly lighter than a comparable piece of art framed behind standard glass, requiring only standard drywall anchors for secure hanging.
