Portrait of Vincent van Gogh

The Artist

Vincent van Gogh

Dutch · 1853 - 1890 · Post-Impressionism

Few painters have shaped how we picture passion on canvas like Van Gogh. In just over a decade of work, he built a body of paintings — sunflowers, wheat fields, starlit skies, his own searching face — that turned thick paint and electric color into a personal language. The Starry Night, Sunflowers, and Wheat Field with Cypresses are among the most reproduced images in art history, and on canvas or acrylic they keep the texture and motion that flat reproduction can lose. Van Gogh died in obscurity in 1890; today his work hangs in nearly every great museum.
