The Artist
Hashiguchi Goyō
Japanese · 1880 - 1921 · Shin-hanga
Hashiguchi Goyō produced a small body of shin-hanga ("new prints") portraits before his early death — refined, almost photographic studies of women in everyday moments. His technical mastery raised the genre out of mass-market woodblock into something closer to chamber music. The prints are quiet, precise, and grow rather than wear with time on the wall.
